U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly will serve a third term representing the 3rd Congressional District in Washington, D.C.

Republican Kelly, 66, of Butler on Tuesday defeated Democrat Dan LaVallee of Cranberry Township.

Districtwide, Kelly received 112,588 votes, 60.6 percent, while LaVallee received 73,274 votes, which was 39.4 percent.

In Butler County, Kelly won with 38,327 votes, 70.5 percent. LaValle received 16,444 votes, 29.5 percent.

The only county that LaVallee won was Erie County, where he got 23,235 votes. Kelly received 16,402 votes there.

In Armstrong County, Kelly received 12,910 votes while LaVallee got 5,039. In Clarion County, Kelly got 2,628 votes and LaVallee got 837. In Crawford County, Kelly got 13,163 votes and LaVallee got 8,265. In Lawrence County, Kelly got 11,029 votes and LaVallee got 7,694 votes.

In Mercer County, Kelly got 17,129 votes and LaVallee got 11,760 votes.

Kelly said he and LaVallee both ran positive campaigns that did not make negative comments about the other.

“We did it the right way,” Kelly said Tuesday night.

He said this is important since so many people have been turned off by politics due to how polarized or dirty races have been.

In his third term, Kelly said he wants to work on pro-growth tax reform on the House Ways and Means Committee and also to keep looking at “overregulation.”

He said that education will be important, saying that people need to be educated for jobs that are available. Jobs in the energy sector will be important, he said.

Kelly also is optimistic about the Republicans taking a majority in the U.S. Senate. He said that Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has tabled 384 pieces of legislation that the House passed.

“That’s unacceptable,” Kelly said.

He said he is not sure if he will run for a fourth term, saying he will see what happens in this term and how his health and family are. He said he felt strongly about running for a third term.

Additionally, he said he plans to meet with LaVallee, saying that getting younger people involved in politics will be important.

LaVallee, 26, said he looks forward to his meeting with Kelly.

Although disappointed he lost, LaVallee said he is happy to be able to get a discussion going.

“I’m just so enthused and so excited,” LaVallee said Tuesday evening.

He said that important issues still exist even with the election over, and he said Western Pennsylvania still needs new leadership.

“They want change,” LaVallee said.

In 2012, Kelly defeated Democratic challenger Missa Eaton of Mercer County with nearly 55 percent of the vote.

He first was elected in 2010, defeating incumbent Democratic Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper of Erie.

The 3rd District covers all of Butler, Armstrong and Mercer counties, all of Crawford County except Titusville, and parts of Clarion, Erie and Lawrence counties.
