2 arrested, drugs found in Mars

MARS — A cache of assorted drugs discovered in a gun safe at a borough home ended in the arrest of two men.

The discovery Wednesday came after a concerned father followed his daughter to the house of one of the suspects at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Pittsburgh Street, Mars police said.

Michael O. Brady, 20, of Mars and Matthew Ban, 22, of Pittsburgh face felony and other charges in the continuing investigation.

A borough man’s call to 911 reporting that his 16-year-old daughter was headed to a house to buy marijuana apparently started the case.

Police were notified about 2 p.m. and met the father near the house, which is leased to Brady, investigators said.

Mars Police Chief Kevin Radford and another officer went to the house and found seven people there, including the girl and both defendants.

Police said they smelled burning marijuana and noticed a large glass water bong, a digital scale and other suspected drug contraband.

A metal gun safe caught the eyes of police. Brady told them the safe was not his, and he claimed it was already there when he moved in.

Investigators checked with the landlord, who contradicted Brady’s story.

Police later got a search warrant for the safe. Inside they found “numerous drugs and paraphernalia,” documents said.

“It was enough to suggest it wasn’t just for their personal use,” Radford said Thursday.

The drugs included marijuana, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and MDMA, which is the pure form of Ecstasy that’s commonly called “Molly.”

“Some of the drugs were in lump form and some were prepackaged,” Radford said.

Police also found two scales in the safe as well as two knives and a samurai sword.

Brady and Ban were arrested without incident. Brady remains in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail. Ban is free on bail.

Radford said the investigation is ongoing, and he did not rule out that additional suspects could be charged.
