George A. Mazzanti Sr.

George A. Mazzanti Sr., 96, of Evans City, formerly of Butler, passed away Saturday at VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

Born in Butler on Oct. 20, 1917, he was the son of the late Fiore and Gina Benneditti Mazzanti.

George was a retired crane leader from Butler Armco, where he was employed for 30 years.

He was a member of the Italian Society of Butler.

He was an avid bowler and sports fan, especially of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also enjoyed fishing. In his younger days, George played softball in the City League for the Spaide Shirt Factory and Charles Horewitz and Sons teams.

A veteran of World War II, George served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Military Police.

He is survived by his son, George A. Mazzanti Jr. of Butler; his daughter, Diana Zirnsak and her husband, Leonard, of Evans City; his five grandchildren, Dannjean Colley of Butler, Justin Mazzanti of Butler, Michael Zirnsak of Evans City, John Zirnsak of Petrolia, and Gina McCloskey of Prospect, and his seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Raimondi Mazzanti, who passed away on Oct. 9, 2007, as well as four brothers and three sisters.

Mazzanti — The friends of George A. Mazzanti Sr., who passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kurt Knobel of the Connoquenessing United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place in North Cemetery.Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the VFW Post 249 and the Lyndora American Legion Post 778.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to VNA Inpatient Hospice, 115 Technology Drive, Butler, PA 16001.For more information, please visit www.martinfh.net.
