Week 4 full of intriguing matchups
Now this is shaping up to be an intriguing (and awesome) high school football season.
What we thought we knew just a month ago turns out to be nothing like what we think we know now.
And that’s what makes this season so great.
I thought I knew what I was doing last week, but not quite. I ended up with three losses to drop my season record to 29-8.
Not bad. But let’s see if I can do better this week with a tough slate of games to predict.
On to the picks:
Butler 28, Shaler 15 — Shaler is on a 25-game losing skid and will try to end that under the sun Saturday afternoon during homecoming.
Butler should add to that Shaler losing streak.
North Hills 29, Seneca Valley 15 — Everything has gone wrong for the Raiders this season.
Seneca Valley does have senior quarterback T.J. Holl back from injury. That should help against North Hills.
Knoch 23, Gateway 14 — Knights’ quarterback Dan Farinelli is leading the Butler County area in passing with 459 yards and has yet to throw an interception in 64 pass attempts.
If Knoch can take care of the football, it should keep Gateway free-falling.
Mars 21, Greensburg Salem 18 — Ori Rinaman is doing a pretty good Josh Schultheis impersonation.
That’s good news for the Planets, who will need to grind out a win against Greensburg Salem.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 39, Brentwood 10 — Another week, another win for the Trojans.
Freeport 28, West Shamokin 14 — The Yellowjackets are becoming a scary team.
The defense has always been solid, even last year as the offense struggled. This year, the offense is becoming potent as well. Add that up and it equals a win.
Karns City 29, Clarion 25 — The premiere match-up of the week pits the Gremlins against the Bobcats.
This could go either way, but I give the nod to the home team.
Moniteau 45, A-C Valley 9 — The Warriors rushed for more than 600 yards last week.
The surest bet in all the land is they’ll be running the rock again this week.
Punxsutawney 27, Union 17 — Union has found a dangerous compliment to its passing game in running back Dugan Gallagher. If the passing game can help open up running lanes for Gallagher, I could very well be wrong on this one.
Slippery Rock 44, Titusville 12 — The Rockets will win. What? Both teams are the Rockets? Well, the Rockets from Slippery Rock will win because, behind that O-line, I could run for 100 yards.
Greenville 30, Grove City 13 — It could be a rough season for the Eagles record-wise. Make no mistake about it, though, Grove City is loaded with young talent.
They are a team to watch.
Aliquippa 49, Summit Academy 6 — Speaking of long seasons, the Knights are in the midst of one.
Scoop is still on pace for 100 wins.
