Football's full of intrigue

We’re only two weeks into the high school football season and things are already getting interesting.

Injuries. Quarterback changes. New coaches off to good starts. Powerhouses doing what powerhouses do. Teams off to uncharacteristic slow starts.

It’s all added up to lots of drama on the gridiron each weekend.

This week should be more of the same.

As for me, I’m off to a pretty good start at 21-5 after a solid 10-3 effort last week.

Let’s see if I can roll a perfect prognostication rating this week.

On to the picks:

North Hills 26, Butler 6 — Damien Pickett may be the real deal for the Golden Tornado.

The back bruised his way to 276 yards on 29 carries against Baldwin in Butler’s big win.

To say the Golden Tornado have had a difficult time with North Hills is an understatement. This is a big litmus test to see if the improvement shown by the Golden Tornado is not just fool’s gold.

Seneca Valley 25, Norwin 13 — The Raiders are off to a very unlikely 0-2 start. Not much has gone Seneca Valley’s way.

The Raiders should get a shot in the arm with a win this week.

Knoch 28, Ringgold 15 — The Knights’ defense is legit.

Their offense isn’t too shabby, either.

It deserves saying again: Look out for the Knights.

Mars 20, Franklin Regional 9 — Ori Rinaman made for a pretty good Josh Schultheis in a 54-0 Mars win over Yough last week.

Rinaman is a good athlete and should continue to shine this week.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 44, OLSH 12 — Can anyone stop Cardinal Wuerl?

Not this week. The beat goes on.

Freeport 25, Deer Lakes 9 — The Yellowjackets have a stingy defense and it was on full display last week in a shutout over Ford City.

That dominant ‘D’ should handle Deer Lakes.

Karns City 37, St. Marys 7 — The Gremlins are just a machine — and there are many, many cogs in it.

Sixteen players have at least one carry for Karns City this season — and we’re only in Week 2.

Moniteau 30, Port Allegany 15 — The Warriors are on the way to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2011.

Union 30, A-C Valley 14 — This is perhaps the most intriguing game on the docket.

Slippery Rock 35, Grove City 17 — The Eagles certainly had an eventful weekend.

Grove City switched quarterbacks, traveled to Corry Friday and played a little over two quarters before lightning forced a suspended game. The Eagles went back up to Corry Saturday and fell to 0-2.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Eagles this week when they take on Slippery Rock.

New Brighton 41, Summit Academy 12 — It could be a long year for the Knights.

Scoop could average 5.5 yards per carry as a running back for Karns City.
