Man gets prison time for assault on boy

A city man who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy at knifepoint inside the YMCA will spend 5 1/2 to 16 years in state prison.

Jason M. Taylor, 36, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, indecent assault and unlawful restraint. He was sentenced this morning by Butler County Judge William Shaffer.

According to court records, the boy told police that Taylor was a stranger to him in June 2013, when he attacked him in the Butler YMCA on North Washington Street.

According to court records, Taylor grabbed the boy by the throat. He held a utility knife to the boy’s face, led him into a bathroom stall and warned him not to scream.

After locking the stall, Taylor kissed and fondled the boy and removed some of the boy’s clothes.

The boy heard someone walk into the bathroom and yelled for help. Taylor unlocked the stall door and ran out. But several YMCA members who heard the boy’s cries rushed to help, stopping Taylor and holding him for police.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope, who prosecuted the case, said Taylor was evaluated by a member of the state’s Sexual Offender Assessment Board who determined Taylor does not meet the criteria to be deemed a sexually violent predator.

However, due to the indecent assault conviction, Taylor still must register his whereabouts with the state police for the rest of his life.

Court records show Taylor, who received credit for 440 days he already spent in prison awaiting the resolution of this case, has several prior convictions for forgery and theft between 2002 and 2008 in Butler, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties
