L. Jack Claypool

L. Jack Claypool, 76, of South Buffalo Township passed away Thursday while in the company of his wife at Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot.

Jack was born in the Slate Lick area of Freeport on March 26, 1938. He was the son of the late Lillian (Black) and Mervin S. Claypool.

Jack was a 1956 graduate of Freeport High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation. When Jack's service to his country was complete, he went to work in the maintenance department at Moonlight Mushrooms in Winfield Township for 31 years. Jack also worked for Bricklayers Union Local 9 for more than 25 years.

He was a member of the F&AM Lodge 239 in Freeport, Coudersport Consistory, Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the Keystone Elk Country Alliance. He was an avid hunter and traveler and enjoyed boating and water-skiing and outdoor activities. Jack loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, June (Spohn) Claypool; his daughters, Tara (Chuck) Smith of South Buffalo Township and Mandi (Pete) Shirley, of Columbus, Ohio; his son, Larry Claypool of South Buffalo Township; his six grandchildren, Courtney (Jimmy) Eiler and Devin Smith, Katie and Hannah Shirley, and Taylor and Piper Claypool; his great-granddaughter, Hayden Eiler; his two brothers, Sam (Jane) Claypool of Indiana, and Gene (JoAnn) Claypool of Jackson Center; and his close friends, Don and Deb Nulph.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Claypool; his sister, June Arnold; and his grandson, McCabe Claypool.

Claypool— The family and friends of L. Jack Claypool, who passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014, will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Redmond Funeral Home, 524 High St., Freeport.Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. to time of service at 11 a.m. Monday at Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church, 106 Brown Road, Freeport, with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating.
