No time wasted
BUFFALO TWP — When it comes to clinching points championships at Lernerville this season — why waste time?
Carl Bowser of Sarver in the Sprints, Alex Ferree of Saxonburg in the Late Models and Rex King Jr. of Bristolville, Ohio, in the Modifieds all wrapped up track titles with a week to spare Friday night.
Ferree actually clinched his title outright when he completed the first lap of the Late Model feature. He started from the sixth spot and finished second behind pole-sitter Jared Miley.
He finished first in the division by a mile, entering the night with a 69-point lead over Russ King and widening it.
“Jared had the faster car tonight,” Ferree said. “He had a bobble on Turn 4 that got me closer, but I wasn’t gonna get him.”
Ferree’s points title is the fifth of his career in Late Models at Lernerville. Lynn Geisler of Cranberry Township and John Flinner of Zelienople also own five Late Model titles here while Bob Wearing Sr., formerly of Callery, won six.
“When you win the first couple of points championships, it’s kind of neat,” Ferree said. “After that, it’s all about winning races.”
Ferree has finished no lower than fourth in any feature at Lernerville all year. He owns seven heat wins and four feature victories as well.
“To go all year and not have a DNF, have nothing break, to not get caught up in anything on the track ... It’s pretty lucky,” Ferree said. “We spend about four hours, maybe more, in the garage working on the car four or five nights a week.
“Joo Corado and Todd Savich are always there working on it. I don’t do it on the track by myself. We’ve got a great race car and a lot goes into that.”
Miley’s win was the 22nd of his career, ironically breaking a tie with Ed Ferree, Alex’s father, for eighth on Lernerville’s all-time Late Model victory list.
Miley’s father, Ben, is fourth on that list with 34 wins. Ben Miley won track titles at Lernerville in 1984, 1988, 1995 and 1996.
“He still tries telling me what to do out there,” Miley said of his father. “He told me I should have won the race last week because he saw something I couldn’t possibly see from the car.
“I’ve been coming to this track since I was 2. I never thought I’d be driving a car on this track, let alone winning these races.”
Bowser has been quite a winner himself this season. He wrapped up the Sprint points title in grand fashion, swapping slide jobs and the lead numerous times with Logan Wagner of Bedford before grabbing the lead for good on Turn 3 of the feature’s final lap.
Bowser claimed his fifth win of the year at Lernerville, 14th of his career here and 20th of his career overall.
He also won his seventh heat race of the campaign and registered his 12th top five finish of 2013.
“I cut a tire one night when I was leading the race,” Bowser said. “That’s the only night we missed the top five.”
Bowser claimed his first Lernerville points title in 2011.
“I didn’t get to clinch that one the way we did tonight,” Bowser said. “This one means more to me because we’ve been so good all year.
“We’ve had a dominant season and that feels good. I really feel blessed.”
King won the Modified feature, starting on the pole and never relinquishing the lead.
His win, coupled with his father and points runner-up Rex King Sr. pitting midway through the race, wrapped up the title.
The points championship marked King’s first title anywhere.
“We’ve had a good year and this is a helluva track,” King said. “Even when the track is bad, there’s always at least two lanes here. That’s why I like it.
“I love coming here because the track is never the same. You don’t know what you’re going to get.”
Jim Fosnaught of Bairdford will take a 23-point lead over Rob Shook in the Sportsman Stock points standings next week. Joe Kelley won Friday night’s fgature, the track-record 47th of his career, but first one this season.
“It’s tough up here. There’s a lot of good drivers,” Kelley said. “I thought someone would go around me sooner or later ... I really struggle when this track gets slick.”
Notes: There were 76 cars in the pits. ... Corey McPherson won his ninth heat race, tops in all divisions at the Sarver oval this season,. ... George Hobaugh Jr. of Chicora, who has finished no higher than 10th in a feature, won the Sprint B-Main. ... Logan Wagner and Michael Wagner, brothers, started alongside each other in the front row of the Sprint feature. Logan finished third, Michael fifth.
