State report released on deadly gas well fire

PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania investigators have faulted site managers in a report on a Chevron natural gas well fire that killed one worker south of Pittsburgh.

The Department of Environmental Protection report released today says a contract worker with no oil field experience worked on the well, contrary to company policy, but did not identify a specific cause for the February 2014 fire.

The report also says that Chevron's well site managers did not always provide enough oversight to contractors at the site about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh.

The blast killed Ian McKee, 27, a field service technician for Houston-based Cameron International. DEP previously said that Chevron improperly restricted state access to the well site for the first two days.

A Chevron spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
