'Seussical' is colorful, full of fun
BUTLER TWP — Grab your hats and grab your cats … well leave the cat at home but grab your hat and head for the Butler Summer Dramatics production of “Seussical.”
It was colorful and well cast with great talent in all the right places. The music was youthful and fun and under the direction of Maria Savannah did a commendable job on the score.
Derek Gieraltowski as the Cat in the Hat, meowed the crowd with his antics and his silliness as he led the story along purrfectly. His energy and his delivery were spot on. His vocals shown in “How Lucky You Are”. He was simply delightful.
The adorable Jo Jo was portrayed effortlessly by the tiny but mighty Molly Miller. It was hard to believe the clear and strong vocals came from such a tiny vessel. She portrayed the Who mascot with great ease and credibility. Her vocal skills were tried, tested and proved during “It’s Possible” and “Alone in the Universe.” She handled the emotional roller coaster of the role quite handily.
Hopping into the spotlight was the surprisingly spicy Clare Stevenson as Sour Kangaroo. She flaunted attitude and verve and backed it up with some serious pipes that have great potential.
Draven Stuart rocked the role of the gentle and patient pachyderm, Horton. There was a gentle strength and depth to his vocals. He nailed expertly the tenderness of the gentle giant. The champion of the Who’s had super chemistry with all of the characters who crossed his path; especially that of Gertrude Mc Fuzz.
The ever endearing Skylar Ruth sparkled in her role of Gertrude McFuzz, the little bird who tried to catch the elephant’s eye. She was charming and sweet. She was convincing and credible and soared with her “Notice Me, Horton.” She brings poise and grace to the role of the humble bird.
Newsflash — Jessica Ortiz grew up and so did her voice. She effused the rich sassiness that the role of Mayzie LaBird requires. Always on key, her stage experience results in a confidence the moment she takes the spotlight. There is satisfaction in seeing a performer grow and mature over the years and blossom into quite the young professional. She was the perfect choice for this simmering role.
Several supporting actors combined with this expertly cast ensemble made for a fabulous evening of musical theater. The cast was huge and their impact was remarkable from Whos to Solla Sollew Crews, these actors appeared to be having a blast and enjoyed exploring the worlds of Dr. Seuss.
