2 men accused of robbery, assault after alleged attack
CLAY TWP — Two alleged robbers remain jailed on charges they beat a 59-year-old man with a tire iron and stole his wallet.
The victim needed more than a dozen surgical staples to close a head wound suffered in the weekend attack, authorities said.
State police on Tuesday arrested the suspects, Ronald R. Piper, 35, of Slippery Rock Township and Dana E. Martin Jr., 38, of Grove City. Both are charged with robbery, conspiracy, aggravated assault, theft, simple assault and harassment.
Paul Fleeger’s face and clothes were covered in blood when police found him after being called about 2:40 a.m. Sunday to his home on Sutton Lane in Clay Township, court documents said.
Investigators also found blood in the house.
Fleeger told troopers that the defendants showed up that night at his home to “repay a debt that they owed him,” according to a police affidavit.
But once inside, documents said, Piper and Martin attacked him. He recounted that he got away by crawling through the laundry room and going to a neighbor’s home for help.
Fleeger later found that his wallet with $250 had been stolen. He told police that the suspects drove away in a pickup truck.
He was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for a head wound that required 15 staples, police said,
Piper and Martin are in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail each. They face preliminary hearings on Tuesday at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
