Streak snapped at 11

It had to end sometime.

The question Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski wants answered now is how will his team respond to its first setback since July 15.

The BlueSox had rolled off 11 consecutive wins going into their game against Lorain County Monday night at Kelly Automotive Park, but four errors and two costly wild pitches staked the Ironmen to a 5-0 lead on the way to a 6-2 triumph over Butler.

“Every good streak and every record — that stuff’s made to be broken,” Rebyanski said. “I probably won’t sleep much tonight because I’m motivated as a coach to go in there tomorrow and try to figure out a way to beat those guys.”

Finding ways to win hasn’t been a problem for Butler (34-19 overall, 19-6 in the second half) lately.

During the streak, The BlueSox had made very few mistakes. They made a slew of them against Lorain Monday.

The Ironmen scored twice in the fourth inning thanks to an error and a pair of wild pitches and tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning with an error factoring in the scoring.

Billy Salem doubled home a run in the fifth for Lorain and was 3-for-4 at the plate.

A RBI single by Logan Landon chased Butler starting pitcher Denis Lyman, who gave up five runs — three earned — and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Butler made things interesting.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Russell Clark hit a high fly ball to center that was lost in the lights and dropped in for a RBI single. Taylor Schmidt followed with a RBI single and Mick Fennell singled to load the bases with Forrest Perron the tying run at the plate.

Lorain reliever Matt Ellenbest got Perron to strike out to end the rally and the winning streak.

“It’s the same mentality day in and day out with these guys,” Rebyanski said. “It’s that feeling you get if you do give up some runs that you are going to come back that next inning or an inning down the road. I didn’t lose that feeling even when we were down 6-0 and I know these guys didn’t lose that, either.”

The big lead was plenty for Lorain pitcher Jose Flores, who struck out five and gave up just four hits in seven strong innings.

Flores pitched well last week against Butler in a loss.

“He’s a great guy on the bump,” Rebyanski said of Flores. “The only reason we scored (last week) on him was he threw a couple of balls away and we capitalized on some errors. Our errors tonight went in their favor.”

Butler’s second-half lead in the East Division over West Virginia was cut by a game down to two after the Miners rallied for a 6-4 win over Champion City Monday.

Both teams have seven games remaining on the schedule.

Fennell, who raised his average to a team-leading .298 with his two hits Monday, will take the hill today against the Ironmen.

“West Virginia is playing hot ball now, too,” Rebyanski said. “It’s going to come down to the wire.”
