Plane crashes at GC Airport
SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — A small, experimental plane crashed Friday morning at Grove City Airport, leaving its pilot injured.
Robert Scott Winder, 83, of Springfield Township was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. He was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, but the hospital said Saturday morning that he no longer was there.
Heidi Ahlgrim, airport manager, said Winder was trying to land the self-designed plane about 11 a.m. but missed the runway. She said she was not sure what exactly caused the crash.
The Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ambulance responded.
Ahlgrim said the crash was cleaned up quickly and the airport’s operations were back to normal by noon.
She said Winder is a regular pilot at the airport. He is the president of the Grove City chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
The Federal Aviation Administration was at the airport Friday afternoon to investigate.
