Motorist faces felony charges in 3-car crash
HARRISVILLE — A northern Butler County man faces felony charges stemming from a three-vehicle crash that left two other people in need of hospital treatment.
State police suspect Anthony J. Lapa, 29, of Mercer Township was high on drugs about 12:50 p.m. May 31 when he caused the wreck in Harrisville.
He fled the scene on foot but troopers quickly found him nearby at the American Legion Post home in the borough.
Lapa appeared impaired and admitted to using heroin and marijuana before driving, according to court documents.
He was arraigned Monday on charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence of a controlled substance and accidents involving injury, both felonies.
Additionally, he is charged with multiple misdemeanor counts of drugged driving and summary charges of careless driving, disregarding traffic lanes, failing to stop and render aid and failing to immediately notify police of an accident.
Police said Lapa lost control of his 1998 Dodge Durango that was northbound on Bennett Street. His sport utility vehicle struck a southbound car driven by Kristy K. Davis, 32, of Slippery Rock.
Following that collision, Lapa’s vehicle continued into another car traveling south and driven by Matthew D. Smith, 35, of Slippery Rock.
Davis and Smith both were taken to Grove City Medical Center where they were treated for moderate injuries, and later released. Lapa suffered only minor injuries.
A blood test later confirmed he had drugs in his system, documents said.
A preliminary hearing for Lapa is set for July 23 in Slippery Rock. He remains free on his own recognizance.
