Ex-Moniteau teacher sentenced in sex case

A former Moniteau High School teacher was sentence this morning for illegal sexually interaction with five female students.

Jonathan Crum, 27, pleaded guilty to five counts of corruption of minors: one count for each girl he victimized between 2009 and 2013.

Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Crum to serve 90 to 180 days in prison, with parole at 90 days. When Crum is released, he will spend a year on house arrest with electronic monitoring followed by 72 months of probation.

He also must pay a $2,500 fine.

“I know a lot of people have been negatively affected by my decisions,” Crum told the judge. “To these people I wish to apologize.”

Court records say Crum, who taught 11th grade English and AP European history, victimized the girls to varying degrees from exchanging sexually explicit photographs on cell phones to oral sex.

One girl, in the criminal complaint, says Crum changed her English grade to a “B” after he touched her buttocks.

Crum, a married stepfather to two, also was an assistant football coach. But none of the allegations against him involve that position.

The lone victim to speak in court told the judge she had respected Crum when he began sending her text messages. His interaction escalated to sexual comments by phone and in person leaving her embarrassed and ashamed.

The girl said she reported Crum’s activities because she wanted to stop him from doing the same to other students.

Assistant District Attorney Christine Studeny told the judge that all of the victims had asked for the same thing: “Closure.”

Moniteau fired Crum after his actions were made public. He has since been employed by a restaurant.
