HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett has signed legislation allowing Tesla to open five dealerships in Pennsylvania.

Tesla pushed for the bill, signed last week by Corbett, because its business model had run up against a state law prohibiting manufacturers from also acting as a vehicle dealer.

The bill won swift approval after the sponsor, Sen. John Rafferty of Montgomery County, introduced it in June.

The law applies any electric vehicle maker and carries certain conditions, including that it deals exclusively in its own brand and it doesn't hold a controlling interest in another make.

HARRISBURG — In an effort to curb a spike in prescription painkiller abuse, Gov. Tom Corbett's administration is endorsing a set of voluntary practices for doctors.The Pennsylvania Medical Society also endorsed the guidelines out this month, which it helped write.Corbett's secretary for drug and alcohol programs, Garry Tennis, says there's been a dramatic increase in prescribing opioids for chronic pain over the last 15 years. He says it's been accompanied by skyrocketing prescription drug abuse and overdoses that have led to Pennsylvania's current heroin epidemic.He says he hopes the guidelines will significantly reduce the chances of addiction to prescription opioids.The guidelines ask doctors to discuss risks and benefits with patients, thoroughly research a patient's medical history and consider an initial treatment with opioids to be a therapeutic trial.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State University trustees have approved of a $2 million renovation of the school's football facilities.The funding comes two months after incoming coach James Franklin asked for wholesale upgrades to the program's facilities to compete with the nation's top-tier programs.He says the program needs better facilities, branding and technology.Franklin had talked in May of touch-screen technology that could replace wall photographs, so players can instantly watch game highlights.Pennlive.com reports the project approved Friday will upgrade the team meeting room and parts of the Lasch Building.The improvements include new carpeting, lighting, furniture, finishes and wall graphics.
