Woman gets jail for theft, burglary
A Slippery Rock woman who stole from her employer and a family friend will spend 9 to 18 months in the Butler County prison.
Sherrie L. Stiefel, 42, in sentence court Thursday said she “deeply regrets what my drug addiction made me do.”
Stiefel on March 24 stole $5,391 from the Honey Bear convenience store in Butler, according to court records.
Employed there at the time, Stiefel was entrusted to deposit the store’s receipts that night.
But instead, police said, she kept the money and later claimed it was stolen from her car after she stopped to shop in Butler Township before she could deposit the receipts at the bank.
Three months later on June 16, Stiefel broke into a West Liberty Road house when she knew the homeowner would be at church.
Court records say Stiefel possibly knew the victim would be away and the house would be unoccupied because her parents, with whom she lives, attend the same church. She mainly took jewelry, according to court records.
The home was equipped with a video surveillance system, which helped solve the crime, police said.
Stiefel pleaded guilty to theft and filing false reports in the Honey Bear case and burglary in the break-in.
She was sentenced by county Judge Timothy McCune in accordance with a plea arrangement she made with the county district attorney’s office: 9 to 18 months in the county prison followed by 5 years of probation. She also must put in 50 hours of community service and pay $19,000 in restitution in the burglary case and $5,391 in the convenience store case.
