Harmony Inn must cut through more red tape
HARMONY — The owner of the Harmony Inn still doesn’t have a date for when the popular landmark will open for business because he’s still waiting for another approval from the state.
Bob McCafferty received the liquor license from the state in early June after nearly a year of red-tape and holdups in Harrisburg.
However, McCafferty had to apply for an extension to that license that would allow him to sell alcohol in the basement, on the second floor and on the patio of the restaurant and bar. He said Thursday that he expects to hear back from the state within a week.
“Things are going pretty well here, but we’re not opened yet so it could be better,” he said.
McCafferty said he could open on a limited basis, but could only seat about 60 customers on the first floor, the only place where the liquor license is currently valid.
However, McCafferty said the wait would be “horrible” for customers, and he doesn’t want to make a bad first impression with anyone coming to see the renovated restaurant.
“We could open and keep our menu limited, but everyone’s first impression of the Harmony Inn should be a good one,” he said. “We’re afraid if we don’t open to full capacity, people won’t understand why.”
McCafferty said the Harmony Inn did serve customers during Harmony’s fireworks show last weekend.
For now, the owner is still putting the finishing touches on improvements to the building and hiring more staff.
“Now I have a timeline which alleviates most of the stress,” he said. “Now we’re just waiting to open certainly sometime soon.”
