City will have fireworks July 4 after game, concert

Butler will have a fireworks display July 4 at Kelly Automotive Park to celebrate Independence Day.

The fireworks show will follow a Butler BlueSox baseball game against the Danville Dans and a concert hosted by the club at the park.

The BlueSox game will begin at 4 p.m. and the concert will follow. The team’s players also will participate in a special autograph promotion after the game.

The BlueSox are marketing the day as the second annual Baseball, Bands and Boom celebration, although the boom of the fireworks comes courtesy of the city.

City council in May entered into an $11,000 contract with Zambelli Fireworks to put on the annual public show.

Mayor Tom Donaldson said the city still is fundraising to pay for the show. So far the city has collected about $5,000, Donaldson said.

Any of the cost not raised by the city will come out of the city’s budget.

“People expect this,” Donaldson said of the reason the city is covering the cost.

Donaldson said the Butler Township commissioners in May declined to donate to the show. The city hosted a similar sized event last year, although some of the cost was paid by former Mayor Maggie Stock.

The city is not working directly with the BlueSox to put on the July 4th fireworks show, and the club will host its own fireworks the next night on July 5 following another game against Danville.

Donaldson said he hopes the two sides can combine efforts next year.

“In the past no one ever did that,” he said. “Next year will be different. We’ll pull our money together and do it with them. It was too late to plan it together this year.”

It is one of the club’s eight scheduled fireworks nights this year, but will not be as large as the city’s celebration.
