The Outdoor Discovery series, hosted by Butler County Parks and Recreation Department, will have a free program on “The Ins and Outs of Composting” at 6:30 p.m. today at the Carousel Shelter at Alameda Park. Call 724-284-5383. The program July 10 is “That Guy with the Birds.”

Cruises aboard Nautical Nature, a 37-passenger enclosed pontoon boat, include a 90-minute narrated tour of Lake Arthur, as sponsored by the Moraine Preservation Fund. Weekend cruises run through Nov. 2 at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $11 online and $12 at the gate; senior citizens pay $9 and $10; and children, $5 and $6. Moraine State Park has family fishing programs at 1 p.m. July 12 and 26. Families must register at www.visitPAparks.com or by calling 724-368-3612. A program about lightning bugs will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Lakeview Beach picnic area, pavilion 4, North Shore. “Purple Martins and Bluebirds — Up Close” will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at McDanel's Launch, North Shore. Members of the Bluebird Society will discuss cavity nesting birds.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, offers Celebrate the Bloom!, a day of free activities from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 19. Activities include prairie tours, demonstrations, food, artisans and music. New this year is a live reptiles and amphibians of the prairie program with naturalist April Claus. Call 724-794-6011.

McConnells Mill State Park, Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, hosts “The Night Critters of Hells Hollow,” a hike meant to feature bats, owls, foxes and other nocturnal creatures, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. July 2. Take a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes and meet at the Hell’s Hollow parking lot. “A Taste of History: Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstrations” will be from noon to 3 p.m. July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. The gristmill is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
