BlueSox get split of DH
Facing the possibility of getting swept in a doubleheader at his team's home ballpark, Butler BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski was pleased with the effort in Game Two.
After dropping a 3-2 decision to Lorain County to begin the evening Wednesday at Kelly Automotive Park, Butler scored five runs in the fourth inning of the second game, salvaging a split with a 6-0 Prospect League win.
Due to the doubleheader, both games were seven innings.
“It's tough to sweep a doubleheader, but you lose that first game and it can be tough to get the guys motivated for the second game,” said Rebyanski.
And the BlueSox (14-10) did come out flat at the start of the nightcap, failing to get a hit against Lorain (9-15) starter Logan Landon over the first three innings. But the right-hander was experiencing control problems and it caught up with him in the bottom of the fourth frame.
With one out, Landon walked three straight batters to load the bases. Nick Sell followed with a single that plated Stuart Levy.
Zac LaNeve's base hit scored Ryan Uhl and Collin Massanelli. The latter's slide knocked the ball away from catcher Tyler Greiner, allowing Sell to come home for a 4-0 lead. LaNeve capped the inning's scoring when he scored on Taylor Schmidt's sacrifice fly.
Landon would last through two outs of the fifth frame. Two more walks jumped up to bite him, as the second free pass came against Sell with the bases loaded, forcing home Levy with what proved to be the game's final run.
“We took advantage of some things,” Rebyanski said. “That was momentum going our way.”
Landon took the loss, striking out two and walking seven while allowing four hits.
“He (Landon) was wild in his first start, then alright in his second,” said Ironmen manager Joe Rhomberg. “Tonight, he was wild again. He didn't have that many innings pitched this spring (with University of Texas-Pan American) and we expected this.”
The six-run cushion was more than enough for Butler, which received a combined shutout from starter Mitch Patishall (five innings) and reliever Dave Yakopec (two).
Patishall earned the win with one strikeout, no walks and four hits allowed. He turned in just one 1-2-3 inning (in the second), but induced a double-play ball to get out of the third frame and stranded three baserunners in his outing.
“Mitch just has to pound the strike zone. He worked deep into some counts and his pitch count was a little high,” said Rebyanski. “With just (one) strikeout, he got some help from the defense tonight.”

The BlueSox fell short of erasing a 3-0 deficit, stranding the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh.
LaNeve singled to lead off the inning and stole second with no outs, but Lorain reliever Matt Ellenbest struck out Russell Clark, got Stephen Sada to ground out and Forrest Perron to fly out to pick up the save.
Ellenbest was the third reliever in the game for the Ironmen, following Jake Hall and Joey Stoll. The trio did not allow a run on two combined hits in 2 2/3 innings.
“We've had three or four recent rainouts,” said Rhomberg. “You get worried about guys getting rusty when they haven't pitched in a while, but they did the job for us tonight. Our bullpen has been our strength all year.”
Ben Standiford got things started on the mound for Lorain by shutting out the BlueSox through the first four innings.
His teammates had staked him to a 3-0 lead, but Butler chased him from the game in the bottom of the fifth.
A leadoff base hit from Schmidt was followed by a one-out walk to Danny Urban.
Sada got Butler on the board with a run-scoring double, after which Standiford was pulled in favor of Hall. The latter retired Uhl, then gave up an RBI single to Cody Herald. That run was charged to Standiford. With the tying run at third base, Levy grounded out to end the threat.
“I thought we hit the ball well, but you can't take anything away from their guy,” said Rebyanski. “Pitch recognition and count recognition, those are things we aren't doing a great job of. Once we start clicking, though, we'll be in good shape.”
The Ironmen scored a run in the top of the second off Butler starter and eventual losing pitcher Adam Bleday. Andrew Gronski singled, moved to second after a walk to Tyler Bires and to third on a fielder's choice. He came home on another fielder's choice off the bat of Lou Peterlin.
Lorain extended its lead to three runs in the fifth inning. Cody Semler drove in one run with a base hit and he later scored himself on a throwing error.
Butler is currently in second place in the Eastern Division, 2 1/2 games behind Chillicothe. The BlueSox host the Paints in a two-game series beginning tonight.
