Mars to host flipped classroom conference
ADAMS TWP — Teachers and administrators from as far away as Australia and California are flipping for a worldwide educational conference being hosted next week at the Mars School District.
More than 600 registrants will visit Mars or tune into a virtual conference during “Flipcon 2014,” which will be held at the high school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Flipcon is the Flipped Learning Network’s annual conference on the new method of education that moves instruction from the group learning space to the individual learning space, according to the FLN website. A flipped classroom sees students doing homework during class and listening to lectures and other classroom instruction via videos at home.
Flipcon 2014 is the organization’s seventh annual conference.
The flipped classroom and flipped learning concepts have been used for the past few years in the Mars district, said Flipcon coordinator and Mars’ Assistant Superintendent Matt Friedman.
“It’s been grassroots with the K-12 staff, but we have teachers using this instructional practice in almost all buildings in a ton of different subject areas,” Friedman said.
Keynote speakers at Flipcon will be Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sames and other experienced flipped educators who co-authored “Flipped Learning: Gateway to Student Engagement”; and Molly Schroeder, a technology integration specialist and global presenter for Google In Education.
The conference agenda includes two panels of students and parents who will discuss flipping in K-12 classrooms and in higher education, six featured speakers, 48 concurrent sessions, and 12 showcases and learning lounges.
The learning lounges are new this year, and will feature personalized demonstrations, help desks and small focus groups.
Concurrent sessions include New to Flipped Learning, Beyond the Flipped Classroom, Tools and Skills of the Trade, Higher Education and Teacher Education, Leadership and Professional Development, and Research in Flipped Learning.
Two workshops for educators just learning about flipping will be held at the Pittsburgh Marriott North on Sunday night. Friedman said most of the conference’s registrants will be staying at that hotel.
