PITTSBURGH — A man and woman were charged Wednesday with endangering the welfare of her toddler daughter, who was found unresponsive and later died, possibly from ingesting drugs that police say the adults had left out.

Sondra Rector, 24, and William Kablach, 62, were released on bail after their arraignments. Rector, who police said confessed to using heroin before she woke up to find her 18-month-old daughter Nevaeh Andiorio, unresponsive Tuesday night, was also charged with possessing heroin.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said results of an autopsy are pending toxicology tests that could take weeks.

Police didn’t describe the relationship between Rector and Kablach, who is listed as the owner of the home in Allegheny County property records.

According to criminal complaints, Rector said Kablach woke her up about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to see if she wanted dinner.

“Sondra was in the process of waking up and noticed that Neveah was not moving,” police said.

Rector later told police that Kablach had placed a 100 mg morphine pill on an end table near a chair “and that Nevaeh was sitting on that chair directly before laying down in the bed for their nap,” police said.

Rector told police she had used heroin before taking her nap and had left some individual doses of the drug and a syringe near the child, police said.

Neveah was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she was pronounced dead.

Police Commander RaShall Brackney said homicide or other charges could be filed depending on what the autopsy and related toxicology tests show.
