Suspected drunken driver allegedly cuts officer with knife
A suspected drunken driver is accused of pulling a knife on two Butler police officers, cutting one on the side of the face Friday night, authorities said.
Police arrested Tyler A. Crawford, 28, of Butler but not before they had to deploy a Taser to subdue him, according to court documents.
Crawford was later arraigned on felony assault and other charges and placed in the Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail.
Police said they were called about 9:50 p.m. for a hit-and-run accident in the 300 block of North Elm Street where a silver Toyota had struck three parked vehicles and left.
The same car a short time later struck the bus stop in front of Grapevine Center in the 100 block of North Elm Street.
About 25 minutes after the initial call, police found the suspect vehicle parked at the rear of Crawford’s home on North Monroe Street. The car had fresh damage to it.
Officers confronted the defendant in his home but he would not surrender. Instead, documents said, he retreated into another room and closed the door.
Police got inside the room but Crawford still would not comply with officers’ demands that he show them his hands. One of the officers deployed his Taser, hitting the suspect in the shoulder with the probe.
”Crawford immediately pulled his hand from behind his back,” documents said, “and was holding a knife in a threatening manner toward the officers.”
The officers struggled with the defendant and took him to the floor. During the struggle, the knife cut police Lt. James Hollobaugh on the right side of the face.
Crawford was eventually handcuffed and taken to the Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Hollobaugh also was treated there for his cut, police said.
The defendant was arraigned Saturday on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, hit-and-run and reckless driving.
