EDCO Park hosts summer fun program

Activities slated for all age levels

EVANS CITY — The third annual Energize Evans City summer activity program is off and running.

EDCO Park officials who coordinate the project said they feel the changes made this year will increase participation.

Cindy Caldwell, an EDCO Park Authority board member and the manager of the park’s swimming pool, said Energize Evans City will include family events on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Organizers last year focused on camps for various ages and interests.

“This year, our focus is family, and using the pool staff’s talents,” Caldwell said.

Wild Wednesdays will feature the pool’s young lifeguards teaching residents of all ages a skill or engaging in activities with the borough’s youngsters.

“We asked our guards to lead an activity they are interested in,” Caldwell said.

Dance club, kayaking, pool games, karate, fly tying, and dive tricks are some of the camp topics. The program begins Wednesday, and runs through Aug. 20. The first lifeguard-led activity will be dance club, which will by taught by a lifelong dance student who is also an EDCO lifeguard.

She also will lead a princess party on July 16, along with other female employees at the pool.

“They’re going to get their tiaras on, because they all think they’re princesses,” Caldwell said.

Another lifeguard, who also teaches white water rafting, will teach a class on kayaking June 25. Those taking the class will be given the chance to get into a kayak floating in the pool.

The programs are available to all ages, and will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. each Wednesday. Cost is $3 per day.

Other Wild Wednesday sessions will feature video gaming and corn hole.

Neighborhood Night will be held at the park and pool from 8 to 10 p.m. each Friday in June, plus July 11 and 25, and Aug. 8 and 22.

Caldwell said Neighborhood Nights will feature swimming, movies in the park, music and campfires.

Caldwell said a campfire or concession stand snack will be coordinated with each week’s theme. For Family Float Night this Friday, Caldwell said ice cream floats will be available.

She said a dinner special also will be available at the concession stand during Neighborhood Nights.

“It’s like a mini vacation for the family on Friday nights,” Caldwell said.

All ages are invited to attend the Wednesday and Friday events. Interested parties can sign up ahead of time or simply show up for the activity.

Those younger than 12 must be registered by an adult. Children 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

A listing of the Wednesday and Friday activity themes is available at edcopark.com or by picking up a flyer at the pool along Route 68. Participants need not be pool members to participate in Energize Evans City.

Caldwell said normal swim lessons, water aerobics and swim camps are being offered at EDCO pool as well. She looks forward to the new format, and hopes residents will take advantage of the programs. She also anticipates some funds being raised for the authority for park and pool maintenance.

“We hope that it brings the community out and raises a little money, but more so that people come enjoy themselves and have some family time in the evening,” Caldwell said.
