IN BRIEF

RIO DE JANEIRO — A police officer sitting on a motorcycle can be seen in an Associated Press video firing what appeared to be a live pistol round at anti-World Cup protesters near Rio de Janeiro's Maracana soccer stadium.

During the small but violent and chaotic protest that played out about a mile from the stadium, a second man, who was in street clothes but identified himself as a police officer, also pulled a pistol and fired two shots into the air. The AP couldn't confirm the man was an officer.

Pedro Dantas, a spokesman for the Rio de Janeiro security secretariat that oversees all security forces, said if authorities verify the accuracy of the video, “we'll immediately open an investigation into the incident.”

DALLAS — Former Dallas Cowboys tackle Josh Brent was released from jail Sunday following his conviction for a drunken car crash that killed his friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, the Dallas County sheriff's office said. The 26-year-old Brent was convicted in January of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 crash that killed Brown.
