Musical theater day camp comes to Grove City
GROVE CITY — Children will have a new place to express themselves this summer: the Broadway Bound Musical Theater Day Camp.
Creative director Jane O’Connor of Grove City, who has 20 years of theater experience and has acted professionally in New York City, said the camp will give children an artistic outlet as well as help them pursue a career in performance.
“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s a little intense,” O’Connor said.
The camp is for children aged 8 to 18 in Butler, Mercer and Lawrence counties and will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St.
It is slated from June 30 to July 3, July 7 to 10 and July 14 to 17.
O’Connor said children can choose to attend all three weeks, only one week from June 30 to July 3 or any two weeks. Those aged 8 to 13 will attend from 9 a.m. to noon and youths aged 14 to 18 will attend from 1 to 4 p.m.
A final performance will be July 17, and children who attended two or three weeks sessions will perform.
O’Connor, who grew up in Warren County, began performing when she was 3. She eventually went on to perform in New York City. She and her husband moved to Grove City in 2012.
Each day, O’Connor will hold acting, voice and dance lessons. She also will spend about 15 to 20 minutes discussing other aspects of performance, such as health, nutrition, the business side and different career options.
Additionally, a professional workshop will be held each week. Workshops will be taught by professional performers who O’Connor met while working in New York City.
“They’re very dear friends of mine,” O’Connor said.
During the first week, the workshop will be taught by Steve Copps, who recently won the Artvoice Artie Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical in Buffalo, N.Y.
The second week’s workshop will be taught by professional makeup artist Nicole Amaducci.
The third week’s workshop will be taught by Ted Sharon, the head of performance at the State University of New York Fredonia and a fight director on Broadway and for films.
O’Connor said about a dozen children have signed up, but she will take registrations up until June 25.
“The more the merrier,” O’Connor said.
The Grove City Arts Council also hosts an art and theater camp during the summer. O’Connor said the two camps are not in competition with each other, and she would like to work with the council at some point.
