Police identify mail carrier struck by car on Friday

Butler police have identified the U.S. postal carrier who was injured Friday afternoon when a car hit her on West New Castle Street.

Carlene L. Paul, 51, of Butler Township suffered moderate injuries about 12:15 p.m. when a Mazda sedan hit her, according to a police report filed Monday.

A medical helicopter later flew her to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. Her condition was not known this morning.

Police said the driver, Kevin R. Bole, 56, of Butler, told officers that he was traveling west on West New Castle Street and looked in his rear-view mirror. When he looked back onto the road, he slammed on the brakes but hit Paul. The report noted the car left 10 feet of skid marks.

A witness recounted that she was on her front porch when she saw the mail carrier try to cross West New Castle Street at Sixth Avenue, walking northbound. The car that hit Paul was not speeding, the witness told officers.

Paul rolled onto the windshield when she was hit, and rolled off when Bole stopped, police said. The impact of Paul’s body cracked the windshield. Bole was not hurt.

Officers saw several people gathered around Paul laying in front of the car when they got to the crash.

The Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service were also called.

Fire Chief Nick Ban said Paul suffered injuries to her shoulder, arm and legs. She was initially taken to Butler Memorial Hospital before being flown to Presby.

Bole was not charged in the accident.
