BUFFALO TWP — Forget about starting up front.
Alex Ferree knew he had some work to do regardless.
Despite starting on the pole, the Saxonburg driver of the No. 10 Late Model earned all 25 laps of his wire-to-wire feature win Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
“I think I made one mistake,” Ferree said, referring to hitting one turn a bit high. “A second mistake would have been one too many.”
Ferree had Russell King starting alongside him with veteran Jared Miley starting third. Morgan Bagley, a World of Outlaw driver from Texas, started eighth and finished third while Mike Pegher Jr. took the fourth spot.
Bagley made an appearance at Lernerville because a scheduled WoO Late Model show in Delaware was rained out.
“Even without Bagley, there was a lot of good competition out there,” Ferree said. “You can't screw up or they're gonna get by you.”
King hung in second the entire race, but could not take advantage of restarts on the fourth, eighth and 10th laps.
“The guy is good,” King said of Ferree. “He made all of the right decisions in lapped traffic. On the one move, he just lost me.”
King referred to an aggressive move by Ferree coming off the fourth turn late in the race. He squeezed between lapped car Bo Lockwood and the wall on the front straightaway and was home free.
“I couldn't get around (Lockwood) and he did,” King said. “Both of our cars were good tonight. This was a case where Alex just out-drove me.”
Ferree's win was his second of the season at the Sarver oval. He also owns two wins at Pittsburgh Motor Speedway, starting from the pole and leading wire to wire there last Saturday.
Ferree now has 27 career Late Model wins at Lernerville, fifth on the track's all-time list.
“The lapped cars gave me room, and I knew I could get through there,” Ferree said. “I had to use the whole race track, though. Of the 25 laps, my rear end was probably over the berm on 15 of them.”
In other features:
Ed Lynch Jr. started alongside pole-sitter Eric Williams in the Sprint feature, passed him on Turn 1 of the 16th lap and held him off for the victory.
The win was Lynch's 108th Sprint triumph at Lernerville. He also has one Modified win, tying him with Lynn Geisler for third on the track's overall win list with 109. Bob Wearing Sr. has 179 wins, the late Lou Blaney 118.
“That was a pretty tricky track,” Lynch said. “Lapped traffic helped me out. I only had one shot at (Eric). After that, I just had to work the traffic.”
Lynch knows about Geisler's win total and how close the two of them are in the all-time standings.
“That's why I want to keep going,” he said.
Rex King Jr. claimed his second Modified feature win of the year at Lernerville, starting on the pole and maintaining the lead throughout.
He had to hold off a hard-charging Mat Williamson to seal the deal, however.
“I knew Mat was coming,” King said. “This was a slick track tonight and he's great on slick tracks.”
The race featured only one restart — on the 10th lap — and Williamson needed another one.
“No doubt about it,” the Canadian driver and defending track points champion said. “One more restart or another two or three laps ... If this was a 30-lap race, I'd have been there.
“Tonight was his night. Maybe next Friday will be my night.”
King agreed with Williamson's assessment.
“I'm glad he didn't get either,” King sad of another restart or extra laps.
Jim Fosnaught started third, took the lead from Chris Schneider on the 10th lap and raced nose to nose with him the rest of the way in winning the Sportsman Stock feature.
Schneider, who took second, was trying to win two features in as many weeks at Lernerville in two different cars. Fosnaught's win was his second in three weeks.
“This year, we decided to just come out here, no stress ... We're here to have fun,” Fosnaught said. “Whatever happens, happens.”
Notes: There were 86 cars in the pits. ... Butler's Dave Murdick claimed his first Modified heat win of the season and came from the ninth starting spot to finish third in the feature. Williamson came from the 10th spot to take second. ... Butler's Steve Feder was scheduled to start fourth in the Modified feature, but had to pull out because of Ferree's win was his second of the season at the Sarver oval. He also owns two wins at Pittsburgh Motor Speedway, starting from the pole and leading wire to wire there last Saturday.
