Fugitive arrested in Butler

Alleged dealer wanted on NYC homicide charge

A suspected drug dealer wanted on a homicide charge in New York City was arrested Thursday afternoon trying to break into a home in Butler.

But the suspect, 29-year-old Glen Ray Carwell, and two alleged accomplices possibly targeted the wrong house on Wyle Avenue, city police said.

Officers nabbed the trio before they could drive away, according to court documents. Inside their would-be getaway car, police found more than 100 stamp bags of suspected heroin and a small amount of marijuana.

All three defendants — Carwell, 28-year-old Justin J. Ervin of Harrisburg and 26-year-old Angela M. Smith of Butler — are in Butler County Prison.

They are all charged with felony and misdemeanor drug possession and conspiracy.

Carwell and Ervin also are charged with trespass and criminal mischief.

Additionally, Carwell is charged with being a fugitive from justice. He is wanted by authorities in the Bronx on a charge of conspiracy to commit homicide.

Originally from York County, Carwell apparently has been recently staying at Smith’s home in the 200 block of American Avenue, authorities said.

Butler police were called about 4:20 p.m. Thursday to a home in the 100 block of Wyle Avenue, where a couple living there reported that two men were trying to kick in the front door, according to court documents.

One of the intruders was yelling a name that the couple did not recognize. The suspects at some point realized they were at the wrong house or the person they were looking for no longer lived there, documents said.

The suspects kicked in the home’s door, police said, but they never got into the house.

Officers rushed to the home and stopped the defendants in their SUV. Carwell and Ervin were identified as the men who tried to get into the house. Smith was the alleged getaway driver.

A search of the vehicle turned up 118 stamp bags of suspected heroin and a small amount of suspected marijuana, police said.

Police also learned that Carwell was wanted on an arrest warrant for conspiracy to commit homicide that was issued April 4 out of New York City.

A detective for the Bronx homicide unit later faxed city police a copy of the warrant.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton later issued officers a search warrant to scour two cell phones that Carwell had when he was arrested. An examination of the phones showed both contained “references to selling heroin,” a police affidavit said.

Stoughton at 10:15 p.m. arraigned the defendants on charges and remanded them to the county prison. Carwell is being held without bail due to the out-of-state warrant.

Butler police said Bronx counterparts told them they intend to extradite Carwell.

Ervin and Smith are being held on $50,000 and $30,000 bail, respectively.

The Butler Eagle contacted Bronx homicide officials this morning but they were unable to provide any further information about Carwell’s case there.
