Elizabeth 'Betty' Onufer

Elizabeth “Betty” Onufer, 92, formerly of Highfield, passed away Monday at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Betty was born on Nov. 28, 1921, in Lyndora to the late Eustaphia and Anna Lokovich Kononchuk.

She was married to John M. Onufer on Sept. 14, 1942. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1969.

A lifelong member of the St. Andrew Russian Orthodox Church, she was also a former member of the Sisterhood of the Altar.

She retired from the food service department of the Butler School District.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Rozanne and Birdy Carosi of Ellwood City; her grandchildren, Thomas (Melissa) and Timothy (Anna) Carosi; and her great-grandchildren, Chase, Gabriella and Natalia. Also surviving are her two stepgrandsons, Dan (Teresa) and Joe (Melanie) Carosi of Beaver Falls; her 13 great-step-grandchildren; and her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, John Thomas Onufer, at infancy on Jan. 1, 1957.

The last of her family, she was preceded in death by her three sisters, Helen Arbus, Alice Thomas and Sonia Tita; her brother, Sam Kononchuk; and her twin brother, Nick Kononchuk.

Onufer— The friends of Elizabeth “Betty” Onufer, who passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, will be received from 11 a.m. until noon Friday at the St. Andrew Russian Orthodox Church, 201 Penn Ave., Lyndora.Funeral services will follow at the church at noon. Her pastor, The Very Rev. Joseph D. Wargo and the Rev. John Schmidt, pastor of the St. Elias Romanian Orthodox Church, will officiate.
