Park kicks off season with CSI Alameda in June

BUTLER TWP — Children who are aspiring sleuths and detectives don't have to go far this summer to help solve a mystery.

CSI Alameda, one of Alameda Park's themed day camp weeks, might have the perfect “whodunit” activities for children from grades kindergarten through sixth grade. The camp returns this summer after a successful debut in 2013.

“Our CSI camp involved things like cops and robbers, fingerprint worksheets, jailbreaks,” said Ashley Helmstaedter, aquatic/program director with the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department.

The weeklong camp, taking place from June 9 to 13, kicks off the day camp season at Alameda Park. While having an emphasis on investigation, it also infuses traditional aspects of camp, like ice breakers, capture the flag, relay games and swimming activities. Some of those activities keep up with the mystery-solving theme.

“By the end of the week, they'll be profiling the staff,” Helmstaedter said. “And at the very end, it'll be whodunit.”

Scavenger hunts and crafts will also be part of the game. One craft project uses fingerprints to create some CSI-inspired art.

All Alameda Park camps are split into two age groups: kindergarten through second grades and third through sixth grades.

Ten more themed day camp weeks continue at Camp Alameda throughout the summer. Super Star Sports, Fitness and Fun, Incredible Edibles, Minute to Win It, Sherlock Safety, Animal Adventure, Scavenger Hunt, Alameda Olympians and Best of Alameda are among other camp offerings by the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department.

The scavenger hunt camp, from Aug. 4 to 8, also has a mystery-tinged theme to it. Campers that week are invited to explore all of the treasures the park has to offer, find clues and most importantly, take home the booty. While the infamous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes is mentioned in Sherlock Safety camp, from July 21 to 25, the emphasis that week is more so on water safety, home safety, safe games and activities and what to do in an emergency.Camp cost is $110 per week for each camper, or $900 for all 10 weeks. Additional siblings cost $95 each, Helmstaedter said.Day camps take place in Alameda Park from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Early drop-off from 7 a.m. and late pickup until 5:30 p.m. are provided for no additional charge. To register for camp, call 724-284-5383 or visit www.co.butler.pa.us.
