PITTSBURGH — Billionaire media mogul Richard Mellon Scaife says he has an untreatable form of cancer.
Scaife is the publisher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and owner of Trib Total Media. He said in a column published Sunday that he learned of his diagnosis recently.
The 81-year-old is an heir to the Mellon banking fortune and is a notable backer of conservative causes. He serves as the vice chairman of the board of the Heritage Foundation.
Scaife says some who dislike him may “rejoice” at the news of his diagnosis, but he “can't share their enthusiasm.” He went on to say none of the causes he's supported give him such a great sense of accomplishment as the newspaper business.
CORAOPOLIS — A student has been awarded a medal for rendering first aid to students injured in a stabbing rampage at Franklin Regional High School.Senior Zachary Fleischauer was awarded an Army Achievement Medal on Sunday at a ceremony in Coraopolis. Fleischauer joined the Army Reserve last year.He was in the school library the morning of April 9 when he heard screams, followed by the fire alarm.Fleischauer assisted four students, applying pressure and taping students' wounds.Lt. Col. John Dowling called Fleischauer's performance outstanding.
PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating a shooting that left a Pittsburgh market owner dead and critically injured a woman who apparently witnessed the shooting and called 911.Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said detectives believe the shooting followed an attempted robbery at the Allendale Market in the Sheraden section of the city.The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the victim as 50-year-old Darryl Terry of Pittsburgh, whose body was found in the street in front of his store.Toler said the woman was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.No arrests were immediately reported in the case.
