Moniteau headlines spring success

Butler County high schools have had more than one athletic team do well simultaneously before.

Mars has put teams in the baseball and softball playoffs in the same spring a number of times, as has Karns City.

A couple of years back, Seneca Valley sent a number of its spring teams to WPIAL championship games, if not beyond.

But what’s happening at Moniteau this spring is a little crazy.

Heading into showdown games against rival Karns City — who are having successful seasons in their own right — late in the week, the Warrior baseball and softball teams have combined to win 31 consecutive games.

The baseball team hasn’t lost a game all year in Pennsylvania.

The softball team hasn’t lost a game, period.

Whether the Gremlins succeeded in spoiling those winning streaks is inconsequential.

Those runs are remarkable. The way they’re happening is even more incredible.

Moniteau’s softball lineup is dominated by underclassmen. Three freshmen — Cortney Claypoole, Kennedy and Kristina DeMatteis — are hitting well over .600. Two other frosh — Gabby Stewart and Sara Hull — are hitting well above .400.

The team batting average is .502.

No small wonder this team is averaging 12 runs per game. The Warriors had outscored their opposition 215 to 46 entering the KC game.

Moniteau’s baseball team dropped a pair of games down south early in the season. The Warriors have been impeccable since.

During their current 13-game win streak, Moniteau has outscored its opponents 121 to 25. In the last two games — shutouts of Keystone and Clarion-Limestone — the Warriors have allowed a total of three hits.

The team’s earned run average is 1.75. Derek Boben is 4-0 with a 0.23 earned run average.

Moniteau’s team batting average is .341, led by Colton Cumberland at .438. Seven players who see regular duty are hitting above .300.

Twelve different Moniteau players have stolen bases this spring, led by Cody Skiver with 12.

So. these teams aren’t just winning.

They are dominating.

Again, we’ve had great teams around here before. We have teams that reach the playoffs in their respective sports pretty much every year.

We’ve had District 9, District 10, WPIAL, even state championship teams over the years.

But two teams from the same school, playing at the same time, combining for a streak like this?

I don’t remember seeing it.

Everybody loses at some point. Moniteau will not escape that.

But the Warrior players, their classmates and coaches, everyone in the school district should be relishing this while it lasts.

It’s rare. It really is downright crazy.

It deserves congratulations.
