PITTSBURGH — Lawyers for both sides are asking a federal judge to change parts of a split jury verdict in a young black man's lawsuit against three white Pittsburgh police officers.

Jordan Miles, 22, was an 18-year-old performing arts high school student with no criminal record when he said police wrongfully beat and arrested him in January 2010.

Jurors rejected an excessive force contention but awarded him $119,000 after finding the officers wrongly arrested him.

Miles argues that since jurors said the officers lacked probable cause for the arrest, any force was excessive. He wants a reversal on that portion of the verdict and a damages hearing.

The city and the officers want the award reduced to $8,415 to reflect an earlier settlement with the city and Miles' medical bills.

MURRYSVILLE — A preliminary hearing in the case of a Western Pennsylvania high school student charged in the stabbing and slashing of fellow students has been delayed.The hearing for 16-year-old Alex Hribal was scheduled for Wednesday but is now set for May 9.Defense attorney Pat Thomassey sought the delay after prosecutors added additional charges in the April 9 attacks at Franklin Regional High School outside of Pittsburgh.
