Lawyer wants stabbing suspect's mental health checked

MURRYSVILLE — The attorney for a 16-year-old charged in the stabbing spree at Franklin Regional High School said today that he wants to have a mental health expert evaluate the boy.

The attorney also says he’s hopes to move the criminal charges against Alex Hribal to juvenile court. For now, Hribal is charged as an adult with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and a weapons charge in Wednesday’s attack at Franklin Regional.

Twenty-two people were injured.

In an interview this morning with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” defense attorney Patrick Thomassey acknowledged that Hribal stabbed the victims and said he didn’t know what motivated him. He said Hribal is remorseful but didn’t appear to appreciate the gravity of his actions.

He said Hribal’s parents were “horrified” by the attack.

Also, police and doctors at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh said one of the students injured had surgery again overnight and is in “very critical” condition.

Authorities haven’t released the 17-year-old student’s name.

Doctors say he suffered a stab wound from a large knife that pierced his liver and missed his heart and aorta by millimeters.

The additional surgery took place about 1 a.m. today.

The student is one of at least five in critical condition.
