SAXONBURG — Mayor Pam Bauman envisions farmers selling their produce in town with a horse-drawn buggy passing by.

As part of an initiative to promote the borough to visitors and prospective businesses, a farmers market is set for Saturday mornings beginning in June.

Bauman said the market is tentatively set to run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind the buildings along the south side of Main Street.

Horse and buggy rides will be an added attraction on some Saturdays.

“We’d like that to be a big deal in Saxonburg,” Bauman said about the market.

She said farmers are being recruited to sell their wares.

The farmers market is just the initial marketing tool for the new Discover Saxonburg group.

Along with Bauman, business owners and other interested parties have come together to stimulate interest in Saxonburg.

One of the group members is Phil Wain of Wain Landscaping, president of the Saxonburg Area Business Association.

Wain said he would like to see Discover Saxonburg lead to new businesses and increased foot traffic in the borough.

“Some of the buildings filled with shops attracting people to Saxonburg,” he said.

Wain said the group wants property owners to help in such efforts.

He said a main goal of Discover Saxonburg is to entice people to spend the day in the borough, shopping and spending time in Roebling Park.

Bauman said one type of visitor to keep in town for longer stretches are people attending weddings at the nearby Armstrong Farms on Ekastown Road in Clinton Township.

In addition to business owners, Discover Saxonburg includes others in the community.

Erin Wincek, director of the South Butler Community Library, also wants to fill empty storefronts while promoting existing businesses.

Wincek supports the farmers market as a way to start things off.

“I think a farmers market in town would be wonderful,” she said.

Saxonburg District Judge Sue Haggerty also is a participant in these group meetings.

“I’m interested in what can come into Saxonburg,” Haggerty said.

One of the group’s goals is to provide visitor guides in key spots.

“Where do you get a cup of coffee?” Haggerty posed as a question visitors may have.

Bauman said now is the time to laud Saxonburg’s merits with the first phase of the historical revitalization along Main Street completed.

“I’m very excited about it,” she said about Discover Saxonburg. “I think it’s great for the town.”

Bauman said the group applied for a marketing grant from the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau to buy advertising and launch a website.

Haggerty praised Bauman for prompting discussions that resulted in these efforts, saying the mayor’s job is not just about running a police department.

The next meeting for Discover Saxonburg is 9 a.m. Tuesday at Bauman’s office in the Saxonburg Police Department.
