SRU softball splits twinbill
The Slippery Rock University softball team earned a big win in the first game of a PSAC West Division doubleheader Saturday at home.
The Rock just couldn't figure out a way to finish the sweep.
Slippery Rock beat Seton Hill 6-0 in Game 1 before dropping the nightcap 5-3.
SRU (5-10, 1-1) coasted through the first game, with starting pitcher Emily Lobdell allowing six hits and no runs. Breanna Tongel drove in a team-high three runs.
The Griffins (13-3, 3-1) hit Rock starting pitcher Carly DeRose for two innings and chased her after two innings in game two. Megan Maloney singled in a run in the third and Taylor Welch hit a two-run home run in the sixth, but SRU couldn't even the game.
The Rock's schedule doubleheader with Edinboro Sunday was postponed due to weather.
Lacrosse
The Slippery Rock women's lacrosse team lost to Shippensburg 17-16 on the road.
The Rock (3-5, 0-3) has lost four straight, including three by one goal. Paige Constantino and Morgan Pettit each scored five goals for SRU.
Track and field
David Reinhardt made his mark at the Raleigh Relays at N.C. State University Saturday.
Reinhardt's throw of 64.5 meters gave him a second place finish and was the third best throw among all Division II athletes.
On the women's side, Julia Cain and Janine Powis also finished with top-10 marks.
Cain placed fourth in the invitational, and garnered Division II's fifth-best distance, with a jump of 3.75 meters. Powis recorded the fifth-best time in the country in the 800 at 2:13.74. She finished 14th in the invite.
