Janet Yvonne (Baumgartel) Smith

Janet Smith

Janet Yvonne (Baumgartel) Smith, 79, of Zelienople, formerly of Richland Township, passed away Monday while in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 11, 1934, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ella Sarah (Shimpeno) Baumgartel.

Janet earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. She served as head nurse at Magee-Womens Hospital in Oakland, Pa., and at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Long Island, N.Y. She retired after 20 years as a school nurse for the Pine-Richland School District in the North Hills.

Janet played the clarinet and saxophone in the Shaler High School Marching Band. At the University of Pittsburgh she sang with the Heinz Chapel Choir. She was a 30-year member of the Greater Harmony Chorus and of Sweet Adelines International. Through her life she loved singing in her church choir.

With her husband, Max, Janet proudly played an active role in the Syria Shrine as a Shriner's Lady, where she most recently supported many organizational efforts and the community mission of the Shrine. She shared her love of books and reading through many years of volunteering at the Northern Tier Library-Richland Center in Gibsonia. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband of 56 years, Max C. Smith III, who she married on Oct. 5, 1957; her three loving children, Charles Evan Smith and his wife, Margaret Rizzuto, of Carmel, N.Y., Denise Ellen Houpt and her husband, Darryl, of Slippery Rock and Bruce Edward Smith and his wife, Jacqueline, of Frederick, Md.; her five adoring grandchildren, Elijah Rizzuto Smith, Dustin and Dana Houpt and Braeden and Marie Smith; and her precious great-grandson, Lucas Houpt.

SMITH — The family of Janet Yvonne (Baumgartel) Smith, who passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, will welcome friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.A funeral ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Elfinwild Presbyterian Church, 3200 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, with Dr. Dirk M.
