STATE COLLEGE — More than 1,100 competitors have registered for the 2014 National Archery in the Schools Program Tournament March 14 in State College.

The state had 817 competitors in this event last year. Some of the participants may advance to the national competition May 9-10 in Louisville, Ky.

The 1,100 registrants come from 42 different schools across Pennsylvania, including Grove City Christian Academy and Portersville Christian.

LEWISBURG — Slippery Rock University senior distance runner Kara Styles received the Champion Scholar Award Sunday at the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.The award is presented at each PSAC Championship event to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average among the teams competing.Styles, a graduate student, carries a 4.0 GPA in SRU's physical therapy program. She has completed more than 140 credit hours without earning a grade lower than an A.

PENN HILLS — Butler Cubs boxer Sam Whalen won his first match in the WPAL Golden Gloves Saturday, scoring a unanimous decision over Paul Covington of Steel City in their 154-pound Cadet (ages 15-16) Division bout.Cubs boxer Dustin Stoner will compete in the 152-pound sub-novice division this weekend in the South Hills.

STATE COLLEGE — Seneca Valley's 4x800 meter relay team placed eighth and set a school record at PTFCA Indoor Track and Field State Championship meet Saturday.The unit of Brad Banks, Tanner Quiggle, Brett Foster and Mike Kolor ran the event in 8 minutes, 6.34 seconds, shattering the previous record of 8:48.
