Dorothy Spence

Dorothy A. Spence, 95, of Harrisville died at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

A daughter of James A. and Ruth A. Sloan Thompson, she was born in Harrisville on Sept. 10, 1918.

She was a 1937 graduate of Harrisville High School.

Mrs. Spence retired from Slippery Rock University after 10 years of service as a library clerk. Previously, she had worked as a sales clerk at Burdick Clothing of Grove City.

Dorothy was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of the Eastern Star in Grove City and Grove City Country Club. She was an avid golfer.

On May 13, 1938, she married Ralph “Bub” Spence. He died on Dec. 12, 1995.

Surviving are her daughter, Machelle A. Spence Scott of Summerville, S.C.; her son, R. James Spence and his wife, Debra, of West Sunbury, and her three grandchildren and her great-grandson. Also surviving are her former daughter-in-law, Mary Spence of Butler; her sister, Marlene Davis and her husband, James, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and her two brothers, Frederick E. Thompson of Butler and Glenn W. Thompson and his wife, Margie, of Meadville.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Durschlag.

SPENCE — The friends of Dorothy A. Spence, who died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2013, will be received at Jamison Funeral home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville, from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday. The funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey W.
