Slippery Rock Council discusses adopting meeting rules of order

SLIPPERY ROCK — Borough council may consider adopting rules of order.

Councilman Itzi Meztli at the Feb. 4 council meeting suggested adopting Robert’s Rules of Order, and he again brought the subject up on Tuesday.

Borough solicitor Neva Stanger said she thinks the borough would benefit from adopting some rules of order.

“It would definitely streamline your business,” Stanger said.

Councilman Ken Harris said whatever rules the council adopts would be public. He said they could be based on Robert’s Rules of Order, but he said they would not likely adopt the official Robert’s Rules because they are extremely long and cover actions the council cannot do.

He provided council members with a sample copy of rules that he wrote that could be considered.

Council Vice President Ron Steele said council will need to research the matter.

Meztli also said the workshop meeting on the third Tuesday of each month should be used for planning the agenda for the regular meeting on the first Tuesday of every month.

Stanger said she is a proponent of using the third Tuesday for agenda planning. She said this would help set up an official way to get items on agendas.

Meztli suggested that agendas also should be posted on the borough’s website before meetings.

Steele said that is a good idea, but the borough does not have a person who regularly updates the website. Meztli said the borough can subcontract with a website such as GoDaddy.com to update the borough’s site.
