Rockets starting all over

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock girls basketball coach John Tabisz wants the girls on his basketball team to get their nerves out of their systems early.

The Rockets next game will be a win-or-go home situation.

Slippery Rock will open the District 10 Class AAA playoffs vs. Harbor Creek at 4 p.m. Saturday night at Kennedy Catholic High School.

If the Rockets (16-4) win, they will be guaranteed at least a shot at a consolation game to reach the state tournament.

“Everything is 0-0 once you start the playoffs and it’s one-and-done. We have to play with added pressure and we have a few freshmen that play significant minutes,” Tabisz said. “We’re going to have to deal with the nerves and shoot the ball well. If we can score a little bit, it gives us a good opportunity to win. Our trademark is guarding teams.”

Slippery Rock will get the winner of Grove City (12-10) and Villa Maria (18-2). The Eagles will also play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fairview High School.

Last season, Villa Maria beat Grove City 56-13 in the first round of the District 10 playoffs and finished as the district’s runner-up.

“Offensively, limiting turnovers will be the key for us,” Eagles coach T.L. Eller said. “If we can somehow keep it a half-court game, maybe we’ll be in it. Their pressure will be great and won’t make it easy for us.”

The Grove City boys will open up Thursday night vs. East at 8 p.m. at Mercyhurst University.
