McClellan wins match play event
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — With his putter working and his confidence soaring, Rob McClellan added another title to his resume.
The Butler native and golf professional at Butler County Country Club needed two extra holes Friday to down Dwayne Randall of Clymer, N.Y. to win the PGA Match Play Championship on the Dye course.
It is McClellan’s first win in PGA Winter Championships play.
And he had to work for it.
“I played well all week,” McClellan said. “Really putted well.”
After a dominating win in the semifinals Friday morning in frigid conditions against David Carich of Nobelsville, Ind., McClellan warmed up with the weather in the finals.
Neither player led by more the one hole and McClellan won the par-4 18th hole to extend the match.
After both McClellan and Randall shot par on the first playoff hole, the Butler native edged his opponent by a stroke on the decisive hole.
McClellan was 3-over-par on the day. Randall was 4-over.
“I was a little off with my driver today,” McClellan said, “but I hit some good recovery shots.”
