Mowry fighting for MMA title
SAXONBURG — Steve Mowry keeps getting busier in the ring — and more successful.
The 2011 Knoch graduate will fight for the Western Pa. MMA amateur heavyweight title March 15 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-9, 230-pound Mowry (4-0) will face Clark Young (4-2) for the title.
“This could open up some doors for me,” Mowry said. “There will be a lot of exposure with this show.”
There are 14 fights on the card and the 2,000-seat venue is already sold out.
“The guy who was going to defend his amateur title that night decided to turn pro, so they decided to have Steve and this other guy fight for the vacant title,” said Ryan Covert, who trains with Mowry.
“He keeps getting better and better. The guy is a wrecking machine.”
Mowry’s two most recent MMA bouts are a first-round stoppage of Andi Iftiu and a three-round decision of New Bethlehem’s Tracy Wyant in Youngstown.
Also 1-0 as a boxer, Mowry still plans to join the Golden Gloves competition in March.
“That will be shortly after this fight,” he said. “I’m geared up for that, too. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
“I feel like I’m primed to win this fight. I hardly ever take a day off in the gym.”
