Four to seven inches of snow along with freezing rain covered Butler County overnight, shuttering schools and snarling roads.

“In addition to all this snow, we do have reports of a tenth to a quarter inch of ice,” said Joe Palko, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office.

The National Weather Service reported seven inches accumulation in Cabot, six inches in Cranberry Township, five inches in Butler, Saxonburg and Prospect, and four inches in Slippery Rock, with a quarter inch of ice confirmed there.

Palko said the snow fell heavily from about midnight to 2 a.m., and then changed over to freezing rain and ice.

Additional freezing rain was expected this morning. As a precaution, PennDOT has temporarily reduced the speed limit on several road ways to 45 mph, including Interstate 80 in Clarion and Jefferson counties and Interstate 79 in Butler County.

As of 8:30 a.m., the Butler County 911 dispatch center reported five accidents in Butler County, but no injuries were reported.
