The Butler County Symphony Orchestra will continue its 65th season with a concert themed “Celestial Fantasy” at 7:30 p.m.Feb. 8 at Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

Featured will be pianist Igor Lipinski.

Tickets are $23 for adults and $5.50 for students and are available at the symphony office at 259 S. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, or at www.showclix.com.

The Butler Symphony will host its 35th annual Young Artist Competition from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Swope Hall at Slippery Rock University. Students will audition for judges, with one student being chosen to perform as a soloist with the Butler symphony orchestra.

MUDDY CREEK TWP — The fourth annual Winterfest will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at McDanel's Launch on the North Shore at Moraine State Park.Events will include a chili cook-off at 11 a.m.; live music by Amanda Noah from noon to 2:30 p.m.; and chainsaw carving by Damian Skal and ice carving by Richard Bubin, both from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Other activities will be a snowshoe workshop, dog sled and ice fishing demonstrations, a family birding hike, crafts, food and a bonfire.Visit morainepreservationfund.org for more information.

BRADY TWP — Old Stone House will present a six-session Early American Hearth Cooking class beginning Feb. 8.The sessions will allow participants to prepare and eat dishes of the past under the guidance of experienced open-hearth cooks. Students will practice a variety of cookery techniques, from stewing and roasting to baking breads and desserts.They will use the Tavern Room at the Old Stone House, at the intersection of Routes 8 and 173, including its open hearth built in 1822.Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday from Feb. 8 to March 15.Tuition is $150, including all materials and supplies, as well as a hearthside cooking recipe book.Classes are limited to eight. BRADY TWP — Winter hiking and backpacking basics, an informational clinic, will take place at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528 near its intersection with Routes 8 and 173.Participants will explore how to dress, receive gear tips and tricks for day hikes and overnights, and get a glimpse of nature's wonders in winter. Some time will be spent outdoors, so participants should dress for the weather. No fee or registration is required.“Nature Detectives: Wonders of Winter” has a registration deadline of Jan. 31. BUTLER TWP — Slippery Rock University dancers have found artistic inspiration in Alcatraz, the former federal penitentiary in California known as “The Rock,” and several of its most famous prisoners, including Al Capone and George “Machine Gun Kelly” Barnes.“Escape Proof,” choreographed by Shelley Collock, an SRU dance major from East Haddam, Conn., is one of 12 original dance works that will be premiered during SRU’s “Making Our Move” winter concert Feb. 8 at Butler County Community College’s Succop Theater.Dance majors, who worked on their dances during the fall semester, will present solo and group choreography in modern and classically influenced styles.Tickets, $5.50 for students, senior citizens and children and $10.50 for general admission, are available online at www.sru.edu/studentlife/union/Pages/ticketing.aspx.
