HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has launched an “Oil and Gas Mapping Tool” on its website.

The map displays locations of wells across the state and allows users to search and view specific types of wells by county, such as conventional gas, unconventional gas, oil or coal bed methane.

After search filters are applied, users will have the ability to view wells via satellite view, topographic map view or animated map view.

Once a well is selected, the tool displays data about the well, such as operator name, well permit number and location information. Production and waste data also is reported.

“We understand how important it is for Pennsylvanians to have access to as much information as possible about the oil and gas industry in Pennsylvania,” Chris Abruzzo, DEP secretary, said in a news release. “For this reason, DEP created this easy-to-use tool to promote knowledge sharing, increase transparency and provide convenient access to well data.”

In the future, the map will provide all records and data collected by the department for each individual well.
