PITTSBURGH — Eight of the Democratic Party candidates for governor are scheduled to appear at a forum in Pittsburgh.
The forum will be held on Jan. 26 at Carnegie Mellon University's McConomy Auditorium. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and the forum will begin at 2 p.m.
The candidates are former Department of Environmental Protection secretaries John Hanger and Kathleen McGinty, Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz, state Treasurer Rob McCord, Pentecostal minister Max Myers, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz of Montgomery County and former state Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf.
They're seeking the nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Tom Corbett.
PITTSBURGH — A $40 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve Pittsburgh Public Schools may be in jeopardy because the district and its teachers' union can't agree on tests to measure teacher performance.Gates Foundation spokeswoman Vicki Phillips said Thursday that the foundation is hopeful the two sides can reach a resolution.The Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers says it has agreed to an evaluation system.
