WEST MIDDLESEX — Authorities in Western Pennsylvania say one man died in an explosion and fire in a garage that also injured two other people over the weekend.

Mercer County firefighters were called to the Shenango Township home shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday and found the garage engulfed in flames.

Police chief Riley Smoot Jr. said preliminary information indicated the man and two other people “were working on some small engines, a snowmobile or an ATV” at the time of the blast.

Authorities said two other people were taken to hospitals, but there was no immediate word on their conditions. Officials said the garage was destroyed.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh's mayor-elect, Bill Peduto, is set to be sworn in this afternoon in a ceremony moved indoors because of the cold weather.Peduto, a Democrat, spent 12 years on City Council.Peduto takes office after defeating a Republican candidate who moved abroad for work during the campaign.He succeeds fellow Democrat Luke Ravenstahl, who did not seek another term.The 1 p.m. inauguration is now set for Heinz Hall, the home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.A public reception follows at the Wintergarden at PPG Place, a glass-enclosed indoor exhibit space a few blocks away.

PHILADELPHIA — A Roman Catholic church official will be in court today for the first time since his conviction in the priest-abuse scandal was reversed.Monsignor William Lynn is not quite a free man. After 18 months in prison, he must remain on electronic monitoring while prosecutors try to restore the conviction.Lynn has served 18 months for felony child-endangerment. He is the first U.S. church official ever convicted over his handling of abuse complaints.Lynn says he tried to protect children as secretary for clergy in Philadelphia from 1992 to 2004, but prosecutors say he sought only to protect the church.The 63-year-old Lynn is due in court to review terms of his release.

PHILADELPHIA — Two American women who helped suspected terrorists overseas are set to be sentenced this week in Philadelphia.A federal judge must decide if they presented a real threat to their own country, or were easy prey for extremists seeking followers with U.S. passports.Colleen LaRose, 50, of Pennsburg, Pa., admits she plotted to kill a Swedish artist over a cartoon that offended Muslims. Prosecutors will seek a long sentence today, despite her extensive cooperation.LaRose, who called herself “Jihad Jane” in YouTube videos, returned from Ireland in 2009 to surrender to the FBI.Jamie Paulin-Ramirez of Colorado and Mohammad Hassan Khalid of Ellicott City, Md., are also due to be sentenced this week.Khalid, arrested before he turned 18, is the rare juvenile held in federal custody.
